Rafale deal in simple words - Part 2
Here is one simple example of how Rafale's offset deals gonna change India's defence sector completely !
Dassault agreed to revive the Kaveri engine project of India's DRDO as part of the offset clause, which is a huge win for India's defence production. lets see how
What is Kaveri Engine ?
Kaveri Engine (GTX-35VS) project was initially started in 1989 as Engine for Tejas flight (India's first indigenous Light combat jets). Even after several delays, DRDO failed to produce the Kaveri Engine, as it lacks thrust to push the aircraft.
Delay in Kaveri Engine project also delayed Tejas production. So India separated Kaveri Engine & Tejas as two separate projects.
Currently Tejas is fitted with engine from General Electric (GE) company as stop gap arrangement.
By 2014, After spending more than 2100 crores, DRDO even planned to drop the Kaveri Engine project. But Rafale deal gave new life for Kaveri Engine.
How Rafale deal going to save Kaveri Engine project ?
As part of the commitment made by France & Dassault in offset clause of Rafale deal, they have to invest around 30,000 crores in India (Please read the attached post for further details)
So Dassault offered to invest around 600 crores to revive Kaveri Engine though its subsidiary company Snecma (Snecma is specialist in Aircraft Engine design & production, It designed the Rafale Engine).
According to the deal, India would not spend any more money on the development of Kaveri Engine but its the responsibility of Dassault to make it ready to fit in Tejas flight by 2020.
They agreed to make the corrections in Engine design, do audits & make it flight ready in just 18 months of time.
Once Kaveri Engine is fixed, India can use its own Kaveri engine for under development Tejas Mark 2 version as well as for the planned 5th generation fighters.
Remember Tejas flight is in production for nearly 3 decades. Kaveri engine is on of the prime reason for it.
This single offset deal itself can change the entire defence production of India....
Trust me the IIT alumni Mr. Manohar Parrikar's intelligence brought so much for Make in India & India's defence..
